  • Going home outfit for your baby. Your baby will be swaddled and diapered during the hospital stay, but most parents want a photo-worthy outfit for the big trip home.
  • Snacks for your partner / your support person. The hospital has a cafeteria (open during the day) and vending machines, but your partner may want to consider anything special they want. Sometimes light snacks are okay in early labor, but we recommend against eating in active labor for safety reasons (and you usually won’t feel like it!).
  • Phone charger. Family and friends will want frequent updates and you will fill up your camera roll quickly. Also make sure minutes are on your phone.
  • Toiletries: Shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, hair brush, deodorant. While we have these things at the hospital, you’ll probably prefer your own.
  • Comfortable clothes for you. Slippers, socks, or flip-flops.
  • Mamas do not forget your baby’s car seater– Some hospitals do not allow you to take baby home without it.
  • Robe and/or nightgown. If you plan to breastfeed, choose a nightgown that opens in the front (although the hospital ones are great for this!)
  • Clothes to wear home. Comfortable maternity clothes are usually your best bet. Include a nursing bra if you plan on breastfeeding.

9. Keep your labor environment inviting

Keeping your labor environment warm and inviting really add value to your labor experience. If you want the lights dimmed, ask for them to be lowered. If you want music, ask. You can also before your labor day, find out from the labor ward what is expected of you to bring for labor. if you want your position changed, hooked up to the machines ask your provider.
