Sometimes before you go you feel your mouth watering and you pray oh no I do not want to vomit. As you brush your teeth, you begin to become nauseous and then the vomiting begins. Can any of you identify with me? Since your sense of smell is extra keen when you’re expecting, you may also have strong aversions to certain foods and smells. It generally begins  and ends between weeks 12 to 16 of pregnancy, with symptoms at their worst between weeks 10 to 16. 

The “morning” part of this pregnancy symptom, however, is quite a misnomer. If you’re among the estimated three in four expecting moms who suffer from morning sickness symptoms, you know that nausea and vomiting can actually hit at any time of the day or night.

My husband would first break the news because he would have the symptoms before me! Some women actually experience this bad feeling all day and to the end of pregnancy. Morning sickness usually occurs during the first 3 months of pregnancy which we call the first time

What are the signs and symptoms of morning sickness?

  • Nausea that strikes after eating, while brushing teeth
  • Typical symptoms of morning sickness include:

    • A nauseous, queasy feeling in the first trimester of pregnancy that many pregnant women liken to seasickness or carsickness
    • Queasiness that often comes in the morning but can surface at any time of the day or night
    • Strong aversions to certain smells and foods that are so powerful they can make you sick to your stomach
    • A seasick feeling that’s often either accompanied or immediately followed by hunger pangs
    • A nausea that strikes after eating, while brushing teeth
    • A nausea that’s so strong it can lead to vomiting

    When should I consider seeing a doctor?

    You should consider seeing a doctor if:

    • The nausea or vomiting is severe
    • You pass only a small amount of urine or it’s dark in color
    • You can’t keep down liquids
    • You feel dizzy or faint when you stand up
    • Your heart races

    Morning sickness itself doesn’t harm your baby. However you should see your doctor if you can’t keep foods or liquids down and are starting to lose weight. Your doctor will want to rule out hyperemesis gravidarum, or serious morning sickness that may require medical attention and possibly hospitalization to protect you and your baby. If left untreated, severe nausea and vomiting can cause dehydration, an electrolyte imbalance, decreased urination and hospitalization. 

    What causes nausea and vomiting in pregnancy?

    No studies have proven what causes morning sickness but there are some scientist who believe that hormonal increase is the culprit.

    How does one prevent morning sickness?

    Spicy foods can trigger nausea and vomiting in pregnancy.

    There’s no way to completely prevent morning sickness. There are however different ways you can help to relieve the symptoms. However, avoiding triggers such as strong odors, excessive fatigue, spicy foods and foods high in sugar may help.

    Here are some natural remedies to help you to cope with morning sickness:

    1. Take enough vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)

    Taking vitamin B6 in appropriate amounts can help resolve the symptoms of morning sickness in pregnant women.

    Research suggested that the combination of doxylamine and vitamin B6 may help alleviate the queasy and nauseous feeling during pregnancy. These can be bought over the counter. One study found vitamin B6 to be more effective than ginger in treating pregnancy-induced nausea and vomiting(3) while another compared its effectiveness to the commonly prescribed antiemetic drug dimenhydrinate. (4) Speak with your health care provider about this before purchasing.

    Here’s how to utilize this product:

    • Eat foods rich in vitamin B6 such as kidney beans, lentils, seeds and nuts, sweet potato, soybeans, and lean meats.
    • Begin taking prenatal vitamins at least 1 month before pregnancy to decrease the risk of severe nausea. Vitamin B6 supplements are considered safe. You must consult your doctor about the correct dosage before starting.

    2.Grab some ginger

     Ginger must be taken in very small quantities as excessive use during pregnancy can increase the risk of a miscarriage. A study found that consuming less than 1,500 mg of ginger daily did not increase the risks of heartburn, miscarriage, or drowsiness. (5)Mamas and dads to be this is not what we want right?

    Research has found that using ginger helped improve the symptoms of nausea without any risks of drowsiness, heartburn, or miscarriage. (5)

    3. Essential oils are you friends in early pregnancy.

    Take advantage of your essential oils when experiencing morning sickness. One study demonstrated the positive effect of peppermint aromatherapy in managing pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting, but much of this was due to psychological conditioning rather than any actual physiological impact of peppermint oil aromatherapy on symptom relief. (8)

    The awesome scent of peppermint is widely known for relaxing the mind and body. This treatment can also help relieve morning sickness by calming your gastric muscles and gag reflex.

    One study found that peppermint inhalation had no effects on reducing nausea and vomiting in pregnant women. (9)Smelling the therapeutic vapors of peppermint oil can help relax your stomach muscles for better digestion and thereby reduce the tendency to throw up.

    4. Use lemon oil

    Essential oils can be too potent by themselves and, therefore must be diluted in a carrier oil, such as coconut or olive oil, before using. There is a study that showed 40% of the pregnant female participants successfully used lemon essential oil aromatherapy to get comfort from nausea and vomiting. (10)

    Although anecdotal evidence has encouraged several women to use lemon essential oil aromatherapy, further in-depth research is required to validate its antiemetic properties.

    5. Eat fennel seeds

    Fennel seeds have been extensively used as digestive aids and antiemetic agents. (11) Both these properties justify their use in the management of morning sickness.

    Here’s how to utilize this product:

    • Eat 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds after meals for better digestion.
    • Drink some fennel tea by boiling 1 cup of water and then steeping 1 teaspoon of crushed fennel seeds in it after turning off the heat. Strain the liquid after a few minutes, and add some honey and lemon juice in it for better taste. Drink this calming drink whenever you feel bad. Remember  to consult your doctor before taking any herbal tea to rule out any health risks and determine the right dosage.

    6. Use some acupuncture

    Acupressure therapy must be performed by a practicing professional. A 2016 systematic review that pooled the results of 20 trials found that acupressure therapy was effective in reducing the symptoms of morning sickness. Although the therapy was effective, some participants experienced pain, swelling, and numbness in their hands. Further research is required in this area. (12). (Nausea bands might help).

    Acupuncture works by using specially designed needles to activate the pressure points. This reaction brings relief to morning sickness. Avoid smoking. Restrict exposure to passive smoke.

    7.Practice good exercise techniques and lighting

    This includes meat, fish, poultry, sardines, and eggs. Get into the habit o eating foods that you feel like eating. This worked sometimes for me.

    9. Stay hydrated

    Drink adequate amounts of water and stay well hydrated. Adequate hydration is needed in pregnancy to help combat constipationdehydration, preterm contractions, and many other things, so water should be part of your daily regimen. You can choose to eat plenty of watery fruits and vegetables, such as melons, grapes, apples, pears, squash, and oranges, carrots, tomatoes, and celery.

    10. Do not rush out of your bed in the morning. Instead, pull yourself slowly when getting up to avoid morning sickness.

    Many pregnant women make this mistake. I had to learn this. Sit on your bed for at least5 or more seconds. I remember rushing up and heading to the bathroom to brush my teeth, vomiting while doing so. Then the nausea begins.

    11.Stay way from smoke

    Avoid smoking. Restrict exposure to passive smoke. It makes matters worst!

    12. Watch your eating habits

    Eat small meals high in carbs and low in fat at frequent intervals. These include rice, bread, and pasta and avoid fatty and spicy foods. You can also include  bananas, rice, applesauce, and tea. An empty stomach can lead to nausea and vomiting. Eat a bland breakfast, such as dry toast or crackers. (Help for nausea during pregnancy).

    13. Avoid fatigue

    Mamas you can avoid fatigue by getting the right amount of rest daily. Good sleep and rest habits prevents morning sickness.
