GROWTH SPURTS : Your Most Burning Questions Answered!

Don’t mind me smiling here. I can be very fussy. One thing I ask of you-breastmilk please if possible. lol!

Most new Mommies will sooner than later know what growth spurts are all about. These are growth conditions during a child’s first year of life. For me, this experience has been one of the main challenges after giving birth. First of all, I never expected this. I would notice that my baby got really hungry at certain times of the day, particularly the evening and after researching , I found out that babies go through a period called growth spurts where they demand more feeds at shorter periods.

Becoming more knowledgeable about this occurance and how to cope can dramatically help you to cope with its effects. Here you will find the answers to some of your most burning questions:

One of the first things you would notice about a growth spurt is you will notice your baby still hungry after you have just finished feeding him i.e. like you are feeding every hour. Babies tend to be fussier and easily irritated. This puts lots of Mommies to wonder what in the world is going on with my little pumpkin.

One thing you must be aware of during growth spurts is the fact that they are temporary. In exclusively breastfed babies, milk intake increases quickly during the first few weeks of life, then stays about the same between one and six months. As solids are gradually introduced after six months, baby’s milk intake will gradually decrease.

Mommies did you know that physical growth is not the only reason that babies may have a temporary need for increased nursing? Well babies often exhibit the same type of behavior (increased nursing with or without increased fussiness) when they are working on developmental advances such as rolling over, crawling, walking or talking. Mom’s milk is for growing the brain as well as the body!

One of the things you must remember about growth spurts is that they are only temporary. They will pass and you are going to be ok! Growth spurts are likely to occur :

During the first few days after birth

  • Around 7-10 days
  • 2-3 weeks
  • 4-6 weeks
  • 3 months
  • 4 months
  • 6 months
  • 7 months
  • 9 months( more or less)
  • Growth spurts continues through out the toddler stages and to the teenage years.

3.How long do growth spurts last?

Growth spurts can last 2-3 days, or sometimes last up to a week .

4. What is the Best Way to Handle a Growth Spurt Period?

Breastfeeding during a fussy period is one of the best ways to handle a baby during a growth spurt period.

It is not necessary (or advised) to supplement your baby with formula or expressed milk during a growth spurt. Supplementing (and/or scheduling feeds) interferes with the natural supply and demand of milk production and will prevent your body from getting the message to make more milk during the growth spurt.

With that being said, you risk having your milk supply drying up or decreasing. Nurse your baby as often as he or she needs it and remember skin to skin is also a great and comforting skill you can use.

Occasionally, nursing moms may also get thirsty or hungry while breastfeeding (paid link). I know because this happened to me. I always had my water, juice and snacks handy when it was time to breast feed. So do not ignore these signals but respond to them.

Breastfeeding As Often As Possible Will Maximize you Baby’s Benefits of Increased Milk Supply
